What you need to know

Accessibility Services, Inc. (ASI) developed the proprietary autonoME Residential, a combined speech device and environmental control unit designed specifically for individuals with progressive diseases and spinal cord injuries. The autonoME is a Microsoft® Surface Pro tablet customized to operate ASI’s proprietary software.

The autonoME features a user-friendly interface and offers multiple input methods that allow the tablet to be controlled with your hands, eyes, head, voice, or breath (sip and puff).

Environmental Control

ASI’s ultimate goal is to help you achieve maximum independence and quality of life. Environmental control features allow you to turn lights off and on, adjust your thermostat, open doors, browse the internet, make telephone calls, send text messages, use social media, adjust your hospital bed, control your television, and more.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication

When using the autonoME as a speech-generating device, you can select words and messages that the unit will then speak for you. Another great feature is voice banking. This allows you to preserve your own speech by creating a digital copy of your voice. Later, if your speech becomes impaired, you can still communicate and project the sound of your own voice and unique expressions through the autonoME.

Superior Technical Support

A qualified technician from ASI will come to your home to configure your device and train you and your caregiver(s) how to use it. After install, ASI offers ongoing and unlimited phone and remote log-in tech support. If you need to call support, you can take comfort in knowing that you are contacting an ASI technician. You will NOT be connected to an impersonal call center.

Where can I get one?

The autonoME Residential is often fully covered by the VA for veterans living with ALS who qualify for service-connected benefits. If you are a veteran who would like to consider the autonoME, talk with your speech therapist, occupational therapist, physical therapist, or VA representative during your evaluation. Your VA representative will be able to let you know if you qualify.

Non-veterans living with ALS can purchase an autonoME Residential directly from ASI.  The cost is out-of-pocket, as the autonoME is not covered by Medicare, Medicaid, or private insurance.

For a complimentary demo and consultation, email ASI or call 1-800-933-8400.

“I would be dependent upon someone else to do the things I’m able to do with the autonoME. It’s a game changer. It keeps me independent.”

– Brian Newton, veteran living with ALS
