This fully electric certified hospital bed from SonderCare provides advanced positioning features that can help improve comfort, safety, and transfers for people living with ALS.

The Aura Bed is intentionally designed to blend into your home environment, unlike traditional hospital beds.

Medicare does not cover premium medical beds like the Aura Bed. It will only cover semi-electric hospital beds that use a remote control to raise and lower the head and foot of the bed and a hand crank that manually adjusts the overall bed height.

Positioning Options

The Aura Bed enables frequent repositioning, which can assist with pressure relief, transfers, energy conservation, and caregiving.

Ultra High and Low positioning raises and lowers the entire bed frame vertically. The bed can lower down so the top of the mattress is just 17” above the floor. This can help with transfers by allowing you to start with your feet flat on the floor. The bed can also rise up so the top of the mattress is 39” above the floor, which can improve caregiver ergonomics.

Zero Gravity positioning elevates both the upper and lower body, which can help distribute weight and provide pressure relief.

The Chair Position elevates the head and torso to a near-seated position, similar to a recliner. This may help with breathing, eating, drinking, and other daily activities.

The Trendelenburg (Boost) position tilts the entire bed forward or backward without bending the mattress. This may help you reposition and elevate your feet to reduce swelling.

Bed and Accessory Options

The Aura Bed comes in different sizes and configurations. The most popular option is the Aura Premium Twin XL. There is also a 48-inch Premium Wide model as well as a Split King model that allows for individual positioning on each side of the bed.

Standard models have a dark wood finish and luxury models have a gray upholstered finish.

SonderCare offers multiple mattress options as well as specialized overlays like alternating pressure pads that can provide additional pressure relief.

The Aura Bed comes with assist side rails that can be adjusted to three different heights. The lowest position sits below the top of the mattress so the rails can be out of the way. The highest position can help with safety and transfers.

Optional accessories include additional assist rails, lights, a portable battery back-up, and an overbed table.

Availability, Cost, and Delivery

SonderCare ships Aura Beds within the United States and Canada.

Because Medicare and standard insurance plans do not cover premium hospital beds, you would most likely need to pay out of pocket for an Aura Bed. Some private insurance plans or Medicaid policies that have comprehensive durable medical equipment (DME) coverage may help pay for an Aura Bed.

The cost for a standard Aura Premium Twin XL bed frame, mattress, and delivery is typically between $8,000-$9,000 USD. The Premium Wide and Split King models cost more. You will not need to pay sales tax and you can usually claim the cost as a medical expense on your income tax.
